Whole Home Repiping Explained: Scope, Signs & Process

Plumbing

Santa Barbara and Ventura County are home to some of the most charming residential neighborhoods in Southern California: Spanish Colonials, Craftsman bungalows, and mid-century ranch homes. A lot of that housing stock dates back to the 1950s and 60s, and while the character of those homes is hard to beat, their original plumbing? That's a different story.

If your home has aging pipes, you've probably noticed the signs: low water pressure, rusty-colored water, or leaks that keep coming back no matter how many times you patch them. When those problems show up throughout the house, not just at one fixture, it's often a sign that the pipes themselves are the problem, not just the symptoms.

What Is a Whole Home Repipe?

A whole home repipe is exactly what it sounds like: replacing all or most of the water supply lines running through your home. Rather than patching failing sections one by one, whole-house repiping addresses the underlying issue—pipe material that has simply reached the end of its lifespan.

Typical scope includes:

  • All hot and cold supply lines running through walls, floors, and ceilings
  • Branch lines connecting to sinks, showers, toilets, bathtubs, and appliances
  • Connections to the water heater and main shutoff valve
  • The main water line from the street, if that's also showing wear

One important note: a repipe covers your supply lines, not your drain or sewer system. Those are separate. If you're also dealing with slow drains or sewage backups, a drain cleaning or camera inspection will help sort out what's going on there.

Signs It Might Be Time to Repipe Your Home

Not sure whether you're looking at a repair or a full repipe? Here are the most common concerns homeowners in Santa Barbara and Ventura County call us about:

  • Persistent low water pressure: When pressure has dropped throughout the house, not just at one faucet, corroded or narrowed pipes are often to blame.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Brown or orange-tinted water at multiple taps is a reliable sign that your pipes are deteriorating from the inside.
  • Frequent leaks in different locations: One leak is a repair. Several leaks in the same year, scattered across the house, points to a system-wide problem.
  • Noisy pipes: Banging, rattling, or whistling pipes can signal pressure and flow problems tied to pipe degradation.
  • Visible corrosion: Green staining on copper fittings, flaking on galvanized steel, or pitting around connections means the material itself is breaking down.
  • Your home is more than 40–50 years old: Galvanized steel pipes, standard in homes built before the 1970s, have a limited lifespan. Many homes in our area still have their original supply lines.

If you're on the fence, a camera inspection gives you a clear picture of what's happening inside before you commit to anything.

How Often Does a Home Need to Be Repiped?

The good news: most homes only need to be repiped once, as long as the right materials are used the first time.

How long pipes last depends on what they're made of.

  • Galvanized steel, which was the standard in homes built before the 1970s, typically lasts 20 to 50 years.
  • Copper can last 50 to 70-plus years, but is vulnerable to pinhole leaks in acidic water conditions, something that shows up in coastal areas like ours more than homeowners expect.
  • Modern PEX piping is rated for 50-plus years, resists corrosion, and has become the go-to material for most residential repipes today.

The EPA WaterSense program points out that even small, undetected leaks can waste thousands of gallons of water annually. Aging pipes don’t just affect your water pressure or quality; they show up on your water bill, too.

What Does the Repiping Process Look Like?

Here's what to expect when you work with Rooter Solutions from start to finish:

1. Free Estimate & Assessment

We walk through your home and review the condition of your existing pipes. When needed, we'll run a camera inspection to confirm the scope before quoting anything.

Material selection and scheduling. We'll go over material options, pricing, and timeline with you. Most whole-home repipes are completed in one to three days, depending on the size of the home.

2. Water Shutoff & Access

On day one, we shut off the water supply and make strategic access points in walls or ceilings to route the new pipe runs. We work efficiently and minimize disruption wherever we can.

3. Installation

New supply lines are run throughout the home, including all branch lines, fixture connections, and shutoffs.

4. Pressure Testing

Before any walls are closed up, we pressure-test the entire new system to confirm zero leaks. This step is non-negotiable.

5. Cleanup & Patch Coordination

We restore access points and leave the home clean. For drywall patching, we can coordinate with your preferred contractor or provide a referral.

6. Final Walkthrough

We walk through the finished work with you, confirm water pressure and flow at every fixture, and make sure you're satisfied before we leave.

How to Choose a Company for Whole-Home Repiping

Repiping is one of the bigger projects you can take on in a home, and not every plumbing company has the experience to do it well. A few things worth looking for:

Verify Their License

Always confirm a valid California contractor's license before work begins. Rooter Solutions holds CA Contractor License #1046213.

Ask Specifically About Repipe Experience

General plumbing experience and repiping experience are different things. Ask how many full repipes they complete and what materials they recommend, and why.

Get a Written Estimate

A reputable plumber will provide a detailed written estimate covering scope, materials, and what isn't included (like drywall patching). If it's not in writing, keep looking.

Read Reviews For Larger Jobs

Look for feedback from homeowners who had full repipes done, not just small repairs. Comments about communication, cleanliness, and follow-through matter a lot when someone is in your home for multiple days.

Ask About Warranties

Quality work should come with a warranty on both labor and materials. Ask our team about current warranty terms when you call.

Ask About Financing

A whole-home repipe is an investment. Rooter Solutions offers no-interest financing, so the decision doesn't have to be stressful.
